The Funway Park Playground Committee is a group of parents,
teachers, administrators and community leaders working together
to achieve an important objective: to design and install a
fun, safe and accessible play structure at the Stanley Elementary
School.
The Stanley School is the city’s largest elementary
school, serving more than 450 students. The school also houses
half of Waltham’s Special Education Integrated Preschool
Program, and is therefore home to many young students with
special needs. Yet, we have no play structures available to
the students in grades 1-5. The school has only two very small
play structures, designed for and used exclusively by the
preschool and kindergarten students.
Given these factors, we plan to install a play structure
that will:
- Help counter the alarming increase in childhood obesity
and related health problems by making recess more active
and fun
- Provide constructive and rewarding play experiences to
help each child improve balance, flexibility, strength,
confidence, self-esteem and cooperation skills
- Exceed minimum ADA requirements, making the structure
usable and fun for all students, including those with significant
physical challenges.
Our goal is to raise $180,000 by March 2007 to pay for the
new playground. We have the plans and team in place to make
it happen, but we need your help. Your tax-deductible donation*
will help make the Stanley School’s new playground
a reality.
